Artist, born in Hangzhou in 1957, graduated from the Department of Oil Painting at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1984.
Recognized as a pioneer of video art in China, Zhang's works are held in major international institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

He has been invited to participate in the Venice Biennale three times, received the CCAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and the "Zhe Craftsman Award" from the China Academy of Art in 2018.
